Hida old town, morning markets, and sake under cedar balls

The mountain heart of the loop — a preserved merchant town that makes the easiest, most atmospheric base between Kanazawa and the onsen.

Takayama sits high in the Hida mountains, and its isolation preserved it. The old town’s lattice-fronted merchant houses, sake breweries, and the river running through it all feel genuinely lived-in rather than staged. The scenic ride out on the Hida limited express — following river gorges much of the way — is half the pleasure of arriving.

Mornings are the point

Two riverside morning markets sell pickles, produce, and crafts daily; they wind down by midday, so this is a get-up-early town. After the market, walk the sake-brewery circuit: each working brewery hangs a sugidama, a ball of cedar boughs, above the door — green when the new sake is fresh, browning as it ages. Shirakawa-go, slotted in

An hour by bus from Takayama, the village of Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO-listed cluster of gassho-zukuri farmhouses — steep thatched roofs angled, the story goes, like hands pressed in prayer, shedding the heavy mountain snow. It is justly famous, which means it can fill with coaches midday.

• Go early or late to catch the village quiet.
• The hillside viewpoint over the valley is worth the short climb.
• It works well as a half-day between Takayama and the onsen road, rather than a separate overnight.
