Morning — the most beautiful palace

Of the old palaces, this one — smaller, set against a wooded hillside — is the one most people call the prettiest, and it feels calmer than the grand palace of Day 1. The highlight is the rear garden, the “Secret Garden”: pavilions, a lotus pond, and centuries-old trees, visited only on a timed guided walk. Book the garden tour ahead online if you can, especially in autumn when the maples turn — it is one of the loveliest hours in the city.

Afternoon — Ikseon-dong

A short walk south lands you in the trendiest of the old hanok quarters: a warren of narrow alleys where century-old houses have become dessert cafes, wine bars, vintage shops, and tiny restaurants, the old tile roofs hung with greenery. It rewards aimless wandering — pick a lane, follow it, stop for coffee and something sweet wherever looks good. Weekday afternoons are the sweet spot before the evening crowds.

Evening — a last dinner

You are in one of the best eating quarters in the city to finish on. The hanok alleys here and the barbecue streets nearby make for an easy, atmospheric last dinner — another long, slow table, which by now you will have learned is the right way to do Seoul. If you have an hour to spare, the lanes are at their best lit up after dark.

If you have a fourth day

Should the trip stretch, the city opens further: a creative former-industrial district full of cafes and pop-ups, a riverside park to rent a bike and picnic like a local, or a day trip out to a fortress town or the border. But three days, paced like this, makes a complete and satisfying first visit.
